This 90-day program comes from the creators of P90X, and is all about getting big.
So you tried P90X and CrossFit, got in great shape, but didn’t bulk up like you were expecting. Not to worry — there’s a new regimen in town that’s purely concentrated on adding that mass muscle you were looking for: Body Beast. This is a 90-day DVD workout, and if you follow the system closely, you can pack on roughly 20 pounds of bulk muscle by the time you’re finished.
While that might sounds like a big gain in a short period of time, it’s quite realistic. That’s because everything is laid out for you step-by-step, from the workouts to the meals to the supplements. What Is Body Beast?
Body Beast is the next stellar product from home-fitness gurus BeachBody, who have brought us P90X, Insanity and Les Mills Combat. While many of their workouts focus on cardio, core strength and improving your conditioning, Body Beast is the one that concentrates on gaining muscle.
“The purpose of Body Beast is to gain lean muscle mass, to also gain size and to gain confidence,” says Sagi Kalev, who is the creator and trainer of Body Beast. “It’s so unique that there’s nothing like it. It’s not focused on weight loss, even though everything out there is weight loss, weight loss, weight loss. The main thing about Body Beast is how to get bigger.”
There are three phases to the 90-day workout, which include the Build, Bulk and Beast phase. You’ll learn the moves in the Build Phase, with guidance on how to lift, how to breathe and how to engage. Once you’ve got the techniques down, you do the heavy lifting — pardon the pun — in the Bulk Phase for the next six weeks. From there, the final three weeks are the Beast Phase where you finish up your journey going from scrawny to brawny — as they say.
In each phase, you work out six days a week and are off one for rest.
How Challenging Is It?
Body Beast is definitely going to push your body. The workouts themselves are a tad shorter than what you might be used to in something like P90X, but it’s similar in intensity. Be prepared for a condensed workout that’s 40-50 minutes of lifting focused on specific muscle groups with minimal rest.
“The real philosophy behind Body Beast is dynamic set training,” says Kalev. “When you have the philosophy of super sets, drop sets, progressive sets merged with everything that is in the old-school training, you can recruit more muscle in a shorter period of time.” And that’s what will mainly make your muscles feel like they’re on fire after the workout. By following the specific sequence of sets and reps in their Dynamic Set Training, you maximize the muscle’s time under tension and get a faster, more effective workout. You’ll start with a set where it’s light weights and high reps, and by the fourth set, you’re finishing with a heavy weight and light reps. All while Kalev and company push you to do whatever it takes.
“A lot of people just go to the gym and they don’t have a clue what to do,” says Kalev. “The Beast gets results because it’s all in front of you: the workouts, the tracking, everything. If you’re wondering ‘What supplements do I take?’ or ‘What should I eat?’ — it’s all lined up for you in the book. That’s why this is one of a kind. There is no guessing.”
Who Is It For?
Those who are looking to add mass muscle and get big. If you want to start building a body with the type of muscle that can be seen through clothes — or even force you to buy a size bigger — this is it. There are tons of toning and weight-loss routines out there; this is for someone who wants to gain bulk size.
“Everything is methodical with step-by-step instructions,” says Kalev. “Rome wasn’t built in one day. You have to build it brick by brick. If you’re a beginner, Build is a great starting point. If you’re advanced, Build is great for you, too. Then you go to Bulk and Beast, and everything is designed for your growth, recovery and change. Not only will your body grow; your confidence will grow. You’ll unleash that beast inside that’s hiding.”
Guys tend to judge themselves on size. Body Beast is for someone who wants to start moving that needle in the right direction or someone more advanced who wants to push the needle further.
If you’ve never done weight training, this might be a tough entry point. It’s doable for complete beginners, but just like any other intense workout, you’ll want to start slow. If you have experience in the gym, however, but are just spending too much time there and aren’t getting the results, you’ll find what you’re looking for with Body Beast.
How Does It Compare To Other Products?
The best way to put Body Beast in perspective is to put it on a spectrum with some of BeachBody’s other greatest hits. So if Les Mills Combat is at the cardio/toning end, P90X is somewhere in the middle, Body Beast would be at the bulking-up end. What Kalev says is true: There’s a ton of weight loss, toning and cardio building programs out there. Many of them are intense and many of them do a great job of building your conditioning up and trimming your abs down. But many guys find themselves with lean and trim bodies, not bulk.
