According to a recent study, 74 percent of Americans suffer from Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as diarrhea, gas, bloating, abdominal pain and constipation. Isn’t that an incredibly high percentage?

Only half of those people even brought it up to their primary care doctor. This means that nearly 37 percent of Americans are suffering daily with chronic digestive symptoms and are not doing anything to resolve it. And unfortunately even those who did bring it up to their doctor often only receive temporary band-aids that don’t address the underlying problems. If you’re taking medication for this, do take a minute to read the side-effects of many of these medications. You might be shocked.

Consuming Reactive Foods

At the root of most digestive related symptoms is inflammation of the involved tissues. One common culprit that triggers gut inflammation are what are called food reactions. Food reactions can vary in their type and mechanism but the three categories of diet-induced inflammation are food allergies, auto-immune (e.g. Celiacs), and food sensitivities.

Food sensitivities in particular are estimated to affect 30-40% of the population, which means your digestive complaints may be stemming from sensitivities. This also includes children around the ages of 3 and 4. You are probably aware of the current trend of avoiding gluten-containing foods due to its common role in digestive issues. That’s a great place to start for anyone with digestive complaints, but there are also some other foods that are often involved in triggering the inflammation associated with gut related symptoms.

Here’s a quick list of the most commonly inflammatory foods that you should try to eliminate to see if your symptoms improve:

Corn, Dairy, Eggs, Sugar, Wheat, Soy, White Flour, Artificial Colors and Sweeteners

If you have significant digestive related issues then it would be best to cut them all out, but if you’re concerned about feeling limited, eliminate 1 food from your diet for a minimum of four days and see if there are any positive changes. If you don’t notice any, put it back in the list of allowed foods, and then eliminate the next food on the list. Make sure you are monitoring the way you feel by writing it down. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for hidden sources of the food, too.

This means that if you’re not eating whole foods, you will most likely have encounter one of the foods on the list! A good example is chicken deli meat sealed in plastic. It will be high in potassium nitrate, which will produce a histamine reaction, making you feel as if you are suffering from allergies for the next two days.

You’ll likely see noticeable improvements by making those changes, but if you want to take the guessing out of the game then there really is no better solution than getting blood testing done to determine your exact reactivities. The Mediator Release Test (MRT) that Team Kalev offers examines your reaction to 120 different foods and 30 chemicals that could be causing or contributing to your digestive complaints, among other health issues, including allergies, headaches, IBS, arthritis, and even depression to name just a few.

From working with thousands of patients, I can tell you that you are not alone. We have proven this over and over again: “Let food be your medicine and medicine your food”.

If you start to take control of your health now by making the right choices for your body, you’ll be amazed at the impact that a handful of choices and changes can make to your overall health and performance.
